The value of psychotherapy

On Mar 30, 2006, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research reported:

"...psychotherapy may offer longer-term benefits than treatment with antidepressant medications."

From: The Brain That Changes Itself, by Norman Doidge, M.D. (2007). Viking: New York (p. 221):

"Psychotherapy works by going deep into the brain and its neurons and changing their structure..."

"...an effective psychotherapist...is a microsurgeon of the mind."

Consumer Reports (November 1995) concluded:

"Patients benefited very substantially from psychotherapy..."

The November 1995 issue of Consumer Reports carried the results of a survey about psychotherapy in which 4,000 of the magazine's subscribers participated:

"Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents who had sought psychological care indicated that their condition improved significantly following psychotherapy."

"The longer people remained in therapy, the greater improvement they reported."

"And people who received solely psychotherapy felt they had improved as much as those patients who used medication such as Prozac or Xanax along with their therapy."
